Any pundit, politician or commentator who thought that Canada could make its way through this so-called rough patch in U.S.-Canadian relations and come out the other end needs to think again. Trump is not erratic. He is not a loose cannon. He means what he says and it’s all laid out in his newly released National Security Strategy.
For the last year, I have been warning that Canada must come to terms with the fact that we are living next to a neighbour that is heavily armed, militant and determined to break us.
The Trump doctrine makes this clear. It is a vision of international power based on shakedowns, virulent racism and abandonment of democratic allies.
In a recent article, The Toronto Star stated that Trump’s vision is to make Canada a “vassal state.” Up until now, that term has been largely avoided by the mainstream Canadian media. I have been using the term since we launched The Resistance Substack. It’s not because I am prescient. If you know anything about Trump’s rise to power, you know that he treats politics as a form of gangster shakedown.
James Comey was invited to a private dinner with Trump in 2017 and described entering the White House as if he were stepping into the den of the Cosa Nostra. During the dinner, Trump pushed Comey to pledge his personal loyalty and to back off from the investigation into Russian interference.
Comey writes:
“The encounter left me shaken. I have never seen anything like it in the Oval Office. As I found myself thrust into the Trump orbit, I was having flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor of the mob. The silent oath of assent. The boss in complete control. The lying about all things large and small.”
Comey refused to render this oath of loyalty to the new boss of bosses and was immediately fired. But what came next tells us even more.
Trump then invited Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak (who was deeply implicated in the Russian interference in the 2016 election) and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov to the White House, where he turned over American intelligence to them and bragged about firing Comey.
This was done in the plain view of the entire U.S. political, media and intelligence networks. They all shrugged. At best, they tried to make it seem as if Trump was just a bumbling, undisciplined newcomer to global politics.
The fact is that Trump’s ties to Russian intelligence, Russian crime bosses and dark Russian money go back 40 years. It has always been there in plain view. That is why former CIA national intelligence officer Glenn Carle told Newsweek:
“My assessment is that Trump is working directly for the Russians.”
This backstory is important to understand the newly released Trump doctrine.
Consider that when Comey was fired, Trump gave the news publicly to Lavrov, Putin’s personal hard man. Lavrov has been in the media recently, ramping up pressure on Ukraine and Europe. He states that World War III has begun, and Ukraine is the first major battle of this war. Obedient Trump is backing Lavrov by releasing a doctrine that openly signals his determination to abandon European democracies.
The Trump doctrine is a strategy rooted in a dangerously racist world view. Trump claims that Europe is no longer a white enclave because of its unwillingness to engage in mass deportations. Trump imitates the language of white supremacist conspiracy mongers in his use of the term “civilizational erasure.”
This is straight from Nazi race theory.
Trump has long been using Nazi-like language about “foreigners” and immigrants. He recently referred to Somali immigrants as “human garbage”. Such disgusting comments could have been lifted from the pages of Hitler’s favourite hate rag, Völkischer Beobachter.

Now, such comments barely register a shrug in American media.
Even as Trump signals the United States world view is aligning with extremist hate movements. Vladimir Putin promotes the same groups in order to undermine European democracies. It’s all in plain view.
“The growing influence of patriotic European parties [extreme far right] indeed gives cause for great optimism.” - Donald Trump
Putin and Trump are working together to break longstanding democratic allies.
This is the real face of the gangster alliance. It’s all about helping Putin. By abandoning European allies, Trump states his determination to “reestablish strategic stability with Russia.”
I have written numerous pieces on how deeply compromised Trump is by Russian money and kompromat. He is doing their bidding. As for Putin, he is at a dangerous crossroads.
He is attempting to convince the world that he is unstoppable. He is anything but. Russia has suffered over a million casualties in Ukraine and the Russian economy is tanking. He is trying to bluff the West by threatening a world war to secure an elusive victory in Ukraine. It’s not working, so he is calling in his cards with Trump to screw over both Ukraine and Europe to help his murderous land grab.
Trump is more than willing to go along.
In this worldview, Canada cannot be allowed to exist as an independent nation-state.
I don’t think Trump was ever serious about making us an actual “state.” His focus is on breaking us economically. He has never wavered in this determination. The document states that Trump is seeking to restore the gunboat diplomacy of the Monroe Doctrine to maintain U.S. dominance in the Americas.
He expects us to bend to his whims.
Canada must not give in to pressure even if it causes economic hardship. Every time we give up ground, MAGA will take that ground, giving nothing in return. We need to strengthen our alliances with Europe and other democratic nations.
We need to support Ukraine. They are the front line. If they fall, we could easily be next. We need better from our domestic politicians. Some get it, but many seem to prefer throwing sand in the sandbox to addressing the need for a strong Team Canada approach.
As for ordinary Canadians? Keep doing what you are doing. Canadians have shown the world that they understand the mission: we will not be a vassal state.
As the Cape Breton coal miners used to say, we will stand the gaff. We will stare down gunboat diplomacy. We will stick together no matter how much pressure the other side brings. We will last one day longer and remain one day stronger than MAGA, regardless of the threats coming from the American gangster.
