Dear Prime Minister,

I urge you to use the opportunity of the upcoming meeting with First Nations leaders to must demonstrate a clear commitment to upholding the rights of Indigenous peoples affirmed in Treaties, and articulated in both domestic and international law.

Canadian law and international human rights standards require the full and effective involvement of Indigenous peoples in all decisions affecting their rights.

Not only did your government fail to consult with Indigenous peoples over far-reaching legislative changes under Bill C-45, the changes to environmental protections in particular have the effect of reducing opportunities for Indigenous peoples to be involved in some of the most important decisions affecting their lands and territories.

We are now at a crucial turning point. I call on you to demonstrate your willingness to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities and leaders to forge a new relationship based on respect for treaties for the rights of Indigenous peoples under national and international law.

my additional comments:

My family has been in Canada for over 2 centuries, and a great, great, great, great grandfather was instrumental in translating the Bible into Ojibway. He married an Ojibway princess, and I am very aware of the promise of an equal and shared union between First Nations and 'the settlers'. I strongly suggest you read A FAIR COUNTRY by John Ralston Saul to refresh yourself on the details of our history, and the subsequent and ongoing gross betrayal of First Nations.

Sincerely,

Chris  Faiers

Right on!

Your Ojibway connection accounts for the eagle flight I detect in your verses...How lucky you are to have Ojibway in your blood.
