I'm an Amnesty supporter/member

Dear Mr Faiers,

Above all, solidarity and persistence are Amnesty’s great strengths.

That’s why I’m so grateful for your support. Because it’s your solidarity that ensures we can continue to be persistent to help human rights defenders around the world. So thank you for your generosity!

There is nothing an oppressive regime or a brutal jailer wants more than for everyone to forget about a prisoner that they’ve thrown into a cell. Like Mikita Zalatarou, the teenager in Belarus who has faced torture, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison for taking part in a peaceful protest. We will not stop until he is released.

In Iran, women and girls are rising across the country to fight back against decades of oppression following Mahsa Amini’s death in custody in September. The Iranian government is using reckless and unlawful use of firearms against protesters, including live ammunition, but the women of Iran are not giving up. Neither are we.

Please know that even a small donation will make a big difference. When combined with the gifts from others in Canada and across the world, your contribution helps us to continue our work and defend prisoners like Mikita, the rights of women in Iran, in Afghanistan, in the United States and everywhere where rights are under attack

As you know, Amnesty is unique amongst charitable organizations because we do not receive any government funding. This keeps us independent and effective, focused on what you entrust us to do – protect the human rights of people who are under attack, under threat. It also means that we rely entirely on our supporters for funding.

Your donations are everything. You fund our work around the world. You ensure that we can be on the ground documenting human rights violations as they occur.

So I hope I can count on you to renew your support today to help us start the year off strong. As ever, I write to you with the deepest gratitude for your support, and your unfailing commitment to human rights. And I look forward to working with you again in the year ahead.

With sincere thanks,

Nelly Almeida
