Bruise-Berries (Katherine L. Gordon)

I find them each October
carrying the sweet of slight decay
Red Dog Rose, Woody Nightshade,
Black Byrony, deep dark Elderberry,
red-fruited Yew,Wild Cornel and Sloe,
Wild Service Tree purple-berried,
Hawthorn’s blood red omens,
a witchly garden harvest to strew
across an end-of-summer bier
a concoction to stop the heart
suspend all grief, all attachment
in anaesthesia grace,
until some promised April in a different woods
comes to wash the bruises from your face.
